Explode The TV were formed in 2011 by Bentley Browning, who was looking for equally ‘mad-for-it’ musicians. He found Chris Witherall (drums) and Andy Corsham (guitar) who were later joined on bass by Andi Skipsey.
Within 2 weeks of naming the band, (a metaphor for smashing fear, darkness and lies), they were asked to appear on a Sky TV music industry documentary with Louis Spence, focusing on emerging acts.
The band soon got into trouble for their “TV smashing antics” and outspoken comments regarding the media’s shortfalls and culpability in the deception and lies that humanity has been subject to and they were subsequently banned from the show. The footage lies somewhere deep in Sky’s vaults to this day.
There was positive affirmation from the legendary Amy Winehouse, who served the guys drinks later that night and who apparently loved the band and their music.
The guys began gigging and writing and were spotted by producer Tom Aitkenhead, who worked with The Kooks, Babyshambles/Pete Doherty, Laura Marling and The Mystery Jets. With Tom on board, they started work on their debut album, Godbox.
During the recording of the album, Andy Corsham left due to relocation and a replacement was found in Jonathan (Jay) Browning, Bentley’s brother.
Having been through a number of guitarists for various reasons, Bentley, Chris and Andi decided that it was time to try things as a three piece and in January 2016 embarked on writing new material.
“One of the most exciting new bands in London, definitely a band to watch out for.” — Grant Nicholas, frontman Feeder.
“This is proper rocking stuff. I love those guitars!” — Caroline Beavon Q Radio
